MISSION STATEMENT OF IMMACULATE CONCEPTION CATHOLIC SCHOOL

United by Catholic faith, our mission is to form a community of life-long learners growing in body, mind and spirit.

Our Beliefs

1. Each student is an individual child of God with unique, spiritual, physical, social, emotional, and intellectual needs.

2. Students are instructed in the basic teachings of Jesus Christ and the Catholic Church.

3. Staff, students, and parents are encouraged to develop a sense of Christian community by their words and their actions.

4. Liturgical Prayer is a major component of the faith formation of every student.

5. The student is the primary focus of all decisions impacting the work of the school.

6. All students can learn; therefore, curriculum and instructional practices should incorporate a variety of learning activities to accommodate differences in learning styles.

7. Students need to demonstrate their understanding of essential knowledge and skills, as well as be actively involved in solving problems and producing quality work.

8. Assessments of student learning should provide students with a variety of opportunities to demonstrate their knowledge and skills.

9. A student's self-esteem is enhanced by positive relationships and mutual respect among and between students and staff.

10. Exceptional students (e.g. special education, limited English proficiency, talented and gifted, etc.) require special services and resources.

11. Cultural diversity can increase students' understanding of different peoples and cultures.

12. A safe and physically comfortable environment promotes student learning.

About Our School, A Student's Perspective. In the early 1920's, there was a new addition to Clintonville. Immaculate Conception School opened its doors to students. The original building was built in 1923, and extended only to the north wall of the kitchen. Inside this original building was the Immaculate Conception Church. When the school was first built, the church was located where the main hallway, the library, one eighth grade classroom and the principal's office are located today. The entrance to the church was at the window in the principal's office. The church in the school replaced the old wooden church, which the parish had outgrown. This church served the parish until 1939, when our current church was put into use. Over the years the building has grown, along with the student body. In 1954, the north wall of the school was expanded and the gymnasium and first grade rooms were added. In 1959, the final addition, the second and third grade wing was added. New rooms housed many students due to the Baby Boom. By 1962, Immaculate Conception School had 816 students enrolled. There are currently 475 students. Along with several additions, there have been changes in the location of various rooms. The library has seen three different locations, each on a different floor. In the 1950's, the library was on the third floor where it had a short stay. It was then moved to the bottom floor in the current 3rd grade classroom. Finally, in 1978, it was moved to its current location on the second floor. The kindergarten was added in 1992 and is located in the Community Center. In 1994, The United States Department of Education selected Immaculate Conception School as one of the best schools in the country. All of the children participated in preparing the school for the visit from the Department of Education staff, and the Immaculate Conception staff took great pride in preparing the application. In 1996, while visiting Columbus, President Bill Clinton stopped by to congratulate the students and faculty for earning the honor of being selected a United States Department of Education Blue Ribbon School. The entire school community was and continues to be, proud of this accomplishment.
